Barmouth Beach sits at the mouth of the beautiful Mawddach Estuary, with the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia) sweeping down almost to the sand. It's the most popular beach in southern Snowdonia, but the huge expanse of sand means it rarely feels crowded even in peak season. As a full seaside resort, Barmouth has all the traditional trimmings — amusement arcades, donkey rides and a lively promenade — alongside a picturesque working harbour where fishing and estuary boat trips depart. There's no lifeguard service, so take care when swimming, and a craft exclusion zone protects bathers near the shore. Dogs are welcome on most of the beach year-round, with a seasonal restriction on the central section between the leisure centre and the river from 1 April to 30 September. The famous Barmouth Bridge, one of the longest wooden viaducts in Wales, carries both the Cambrian Coast railway and the Wales Coast Path across the estuary, and also connects to the start of the Mawddach Trail — a flat, scenic walking and cycling route to Dolgellau. Good parking, shops, cafés and full disabled access make it an easy day out from Tywyn.
