The dunes at Ynyslas are the largest in Ceredigion, stretching along the southern side of the Dyfi Estuary mouth where it meets Cardigan Bay. They show every stage of dune formation, from the sandy shore through mobile fore-dunes to fixed dunes and scrub further inland, and are home to a genuinely rich population of orchids, mosses, fungi and insects — some found almost nowhere else in Britain. The dunes give sweeping views across the estuary to Aberdyfi and the Cambrian Mountains beyond, and a network of boardwalks helps protect the fragile dune ecosystem while making it easy to explore on foot. It's a lovely spot for a wander whatever the weather, and dogs are welcome throughout. Parking is available on the beach itself for a small fee, though the walk from the car park to the best of the dunes can be a fair distance, so pack comfortable shoes. As with the wider nature reserve, swimming from the beach here isn't recommended due to strong tidal currents.
