Glaslyn Ospreys, run by the small independent charity Bywyd Gwyllt Glaslyn, is one of the great Welsh conservation success stories. Ospreys returned to breed in the Glaslyn Valley in 2004 for the first time in centuries, and the original female, known affectionately as Mrs G, has since raised more than 50 chicks from the same nest. A spacious hide at Pont Croesor gives excellent telescope views of both the original nest and a second, more recent one nearby, plus live high-definition camera footage streamed onto screens for close-up views of fish deliveries, feeding chicks and fledging. Knowledgeable volunteers are on hand throughout to answer questions and share the latest updates on the resident birds. The centre is open daily from around late March/April to September, coinciding with the ospreys' breeding season, and there's a small shop selling light refreshments including the popular Glaslyn ice cream. Entry is free, though the charity relies entirely on visitor donations (suggested around £3 per adult) to keep running. Dogs on leads are welcome, and there's free parking with a few disabled spaces close to the visitor centre. It's a genuine highlight for wildlife lovers, about an hour's drive north of Tywyn near Porthmadog, and pairs nicely with the nearby Welsh Highland Railway, which stops right at Pont Croesor.
